about
I wrote this song once I started dressing more femme. When I do this, I am afraid--especially if it's the night. I rarely go out alone like this. I have the privilege to take this on and off (or maybe the fear just causes me to generally stick to the power of being a boy). Regardless, I see my friends in a new way. Their presence is existential and defensive and physical and we cuddle together.
lyrics
Walking down the street, wearing what I want to wear--finally.
Walking down the street, wearing what I want
and I'm realizing something. I'm realizing something important.
I am starting to understand,
I am starting to understand why
women travel in packs, in packs, in packs:
more people. More people to watch your back.
Stop looking at me--you know who you are out there.
I didn't even know, I don't even know what looking means.
I can't believe I was into all those boy games:
sniper in the perfect snow looking through a shiny scope.
We can't see him, he can see us--
it's not fun.
I'm more anxious than ever,
oh god the summer sun is bright,
but I'm realizing something--
I'm realizing something so important.
I am starting to see my friends in a new way:
a way that is touching. I way that's touching me,
yeah my friends they are touching me,
I am touching the peach.
More people to watch your back.
Quit looking at me.
I can't believe I was into all those boy games:
sniper in the snow looking through a shiny scope,
it's not fun. I didn't even know what looking means,
now I see my friends in a new way.
I see my friends in a new way.
Hiding is real.
Looking is real.
Oh, hiding is real, looking is real,
fighting is real and we need it.
Looking is real.
I appreciate my friends.
