about

Tall Mary's sprawling debut 2LP, which ranges from more straightforward noise punk to post-punk drone epics, centres on being seen as a trans or gnc person in our brutal society. Many of us came out during the comfortable distance of lockdown and Zoom meetings. With the return to "in-person" came the violent seeing, and it was like the shock of a cold lake. As we desperately transform into something new while our current systems fail, the watchers remind us of our old place in society and cancel the future.

This album was Cole Klassen's MFA thesis project at UBC's School of Creative Writing. Deep thanks to Cole's thesis advisor Tariq Hussain, and also to her second reader Keith Maillard. Thank you to the lyric-writing guidance over the years from teachers Leah Abramson, Christine Fellows, and John K. Samson. Additionally, thanks to the poetic support from teachers Sheryda Warrener, Bronwen Tate, and Billy Ray Belcourt. Thanks to Tim from Kingfisherbluez for getting this rolling, thanks to Geoff Pemberton for doing such an ungodly amount of incredible audio work for this, thanks to Tristan Helgason for the masterful skin-hitting, and thanks to Brodie Hovanessian for being a crucial part of the project in its earlier generative days.
